Foundation Collegiate Academy - Academic Program 9th and 10th Grade

English Literature
  • Each Foundation Collegiate Academy scholar is enrolled in a daily 50 minute literature class.
  • Freshmen and sophomore readings include: The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian, The Odyssey, The Color Purple, The Golden Compass and Julius Caesar.
English Composition
  • The English Composition program is designed to prepare students for college-level classes in English Composition as well as the writing demands of any college level program.
  • Freshmen and sophomore instruction is aligned with ACT and SAT standards of reading, writing, and grammar conventions.
Algebra – Geometry
  • This course is designed to expose students to a math program that empowers students to grapple with solving problems, develop abstract, analytical thinking skills, learn to deal effectively and comfortably with variables and equations and use mathematical notation effectively in model situations.
Geometry
  • Foundation Collegiate Academy offers a 50-minute daily block of Geometry for a sophomore that is designed to build students’ capacity to analyze and apply the basic and advanced concepts within Geometry.
Biology/Biology Honors
  • The science program prepares students for college level classes in Biology.
  • Students currently enrolled in Biology take our course in partnership with New Jersey Virtual School. By doing so, students gain a deeper knowledge of virtual learning and technology education while deepening their academic self-advocacy.
Introduction to Chemistry
  • The Introduction to Chemistry curriculum prepares students with knowledge of the scientific theories developed to explain the world around us by focusing on the crucial relationships between explanations and evidence.
  • This course is also designed to build student reading and writing skills in technical courses in order to prepare them for the Science test of the ACT as well as other external science examinations.
Spanish 1/Spanish Honors
  • Foundation Collegiate Academy’s Spanish program is designed to ensure that students are able to successfully demonstrate knowledge of how, when and why one should convey a message to different audiences.
  • All students take Spanish. Students who demonstrate advanced proficiency may be invited to participate in an advanced Spanish language and literature coursework.
World History
  • Sophomores enroll in a one-year study of world history from the Middle Ages to the Present-day.
  • Students engaged in regular discussion and debate both within and without the classroom, as course work reinforces the study of history, culture, warm national resources, environment, gender and geography.
Ancient Civilizations
  • The Ancient Civilizations course, taken by our freshmen, lays the foundation of the world’s early great societies, kingdoms and empires.
  • Students study Ancient Africa, Ancient Greece, Ancient Rome and the Roman Republic as well as Ancient Asia.
College Prep
  • Foundation Collegiate Academy students participate in a four-year course of study designed to ensure that all of our students can effectively navigate the college readiness and application process.
Orchestra
  • All students participate in Music classes throughout the year, learning a string instrument including: violin, viola, cello, and double bass.
  • Students explore the many genres of music and perform music from Bach and Vivaldi, to Michael Jackson and Drake.
Extended Advisory
  • Advisory is an opportunity to build a small group rapport and sense of community within the large school structure as well as a time to develop character building by discussing our core values, setting personal and academic individual goals, establish advisory and community based goals, and exhibiting school spirit through advisory competitions.
